An important thing to keep in mind, is that you can get traffic from social sites, much faster than the traffic from SEO. There is also a synergy, social sites help you rank better, and if your content is linkworthy, other webmasters will link to you.
You need to master that beforehand. Learn what people like, and what they dont.
People like videos, and images. To kick start your site, the most efficient way is through social sites, so give them what they want. Images and videos are sure to bring in traffic. Spend some time to handpick them, but don’t judge them too much, your preferences are not what everyone else likes. I still rank and get traffic from wallpapers on a niche. WALLPAPERS. How gay is that?
Stumble is your friend. A nice handpicked gallery of cool, funny or simply beautiful images, can bring in 300 uniques a day from stumble alone, and for a long time.
Utilize both linkbait, and cool thingies to pull and keep people on your site. Remind them to subscribe to your RSS. Digg, Reddit, Twitter and delicious are great for the initial burst of traffic, stumble will keep it coming for a month or two. Your first goal is the 2000 uniques threshold, as soon as you break that, then your site is alive.
Another threshold are the incoming links.
You need a minimum of 500 incoming links from the beginning. Of course, the more the merrier, but I am talking about different IPs. Ouch.
Your own SEO foundation should get you at least 15-20 unique IPs. If you do not have a foundation, drop what you are doing and spend a couple of months working on that.
Use everything you can find, geocities sites, google pages, wiki links, blogger, wordpress.org, cheap hosting, free hosting, forum sigs,
Make everything modular, include a php file from your master server, so you can simply add the links to the file, and it shows up on all of your parasites. You need to create a system, so that everytime you need a link, you edit a file, and you are done. Don’t do the grunt work every time. Work smart.
You cant make all of them, so outsource the load. Paid options are:
- Do-follow social sites (check out red_virus at wickedfire)
- Mass directory submissions, you can find them everywhere.
- And, tnx.net, the cheap and dirty solution. Buy a thousand links. Yes, its that simple.
No, article submission is stupid. Here is what is clever:
- Trackback spam
- Software submission
Eli was kind enough to offer both techniques. The pingcrawl plugin does automatic trackback spam everytime you post, and it looks good, so bloggers approve the trackback.
And software submission, using Robosoft, can give you around 400 backlinks from software directories. It simply amazes me how well this technique works. It also brings in steady traffic.
Also, no reciprocals. None. At. All.
Honestly, once you master all the techniques, and have the right tools and sites, you can throw up 1000 links in every new site you make.
You need to be on your way to PR 3-4 from day one.
Sure, overdoing it can get you sandboxed if you do it wrong. So what? First of all, learn how not to get penalized, and second, you are an affiliate, not a hobbyist. Leave the site alone, and work on your next project until the first picks up.
This is not your precious little hobby site on petunia gardening, its one of your many money making projects. Screw the pretty little snowflakes, you need a landslide made of tons of snow.
