An important thing to keep in mind, is that you can get traffic from social sites, much faster than the traffic from SEO. There is also a synergy, social sites help you rank better, and if your content is linkworthy, other webmasters will link to you.

You need to master that beforehand. Learn what people like, and what they dont.

People like videos, and images. To kick start your site, the most efficient way is through social sites, so give them what they want. Images and videos are sure to bring in traffic. Spend some time to handpick them, but don’t judge them too much, your preferences are not what everyone else likes. I still rank and get traffic from wallpapers on a niche. WALLPAPERS. How gay is that?

Stumble is your friend. A nice handpicked gallery of cool, funny or simply beautiful images, can bring in 300 uniques a day from stumble alone, and for a long time.

Utilize both linkbait, and cool thingies to pull and keep people on your site. Remind them to subscribe to your RSS. Digg, Reddit, Twitter and delicious are great for the initial burst of traffic, stumble will keep it coming for a month or two. Your first goal is the 2000 uniques threshold, as soon as you break that, then your site is alive.

Another threshold are the incoming links.

You need a minimum of 500 incoming links from the beginning. Of course, the more the merrier, but I am talking about different IPs. Ouch.

Your own SEO foundation should get you at least 15-20 unique IPs. If you do not have a foundation, drop what you are doing and spend a couple of months working on that.

Use everything you can find, geocities sites, google pages, wiki links, blogger, wordpress.org, cheap hosting, free hosting, forum sigs,

Make everything modular, include a php file from your master server, so you can simply add the links to the file, and it shows up on all of your parasites. You need to create a system, so that everytime you need a link, you edit a file, and you are done. Don’t do the grunt work every time. Work smart.

You cant make all of them, so outsource the load. Paid options are:

No, article submission is stupid. Here is what is clever:

  • Trackback spam
  • Software submission

Eli was kind enough to offer both techniques. The pingcrawl plugin does automatic trackback spam everytime you post, and it looks good, so bloggers approve the trackback.

And software submission, using Robosoft, can give you around 400 backlinks from software directories. It simply amazes me how well this technique works. It also brings in steady traffic.

Also, no reciprocals. None. At. All.

Honestly, once you master all the techniques, and have the right tools and sites, you can throw up 1000 links in every new site you make.

You need to be on your way to PR 3-4 from day one.

Sure, overdoing it can get you sandboxed if you do it wrong. So what? First of all, learn how not to get penalized, and second, you are an affiliate, not a hobbyist. Leave the site alone, and work on your next project until the first picks up.

This is not your precious little hobby site on petunia gardening, its one of your many money making projects. Screw the pretty little snowflakes, you need a landslide made of tons of snow.

As promised, I will discuss the techniques you can use, to start a new site. NOT your first site, a new site.

This is not for beginners, although they can benefit from it. This is not a step by step analysis, its a strategy.

All techniques are summarized here, I will analyze them in future posts.

Well, you have your new niche, done your keyword research, picked up a nice brandable domain, and now you need to kick start the site so that traffic pours in the profits.

Regarding the design, you need to make it the same way you want it to look in 2 years. Monetize right away, put up those affiliate links. You don’t need thousands of visitors to make a sale, you need buyers (My personal record is a 350$ sale from 2 visitors. Beat that).

Also, many say that you need to upload the content slowly. That is totally bullshit, except if you are autogenerating 500.000 pages. How many do you have, 10, 100, 1000 articles? Put them up there. The sooner they are exposed to the spiders, the better indexing they will have. Remember, that 2nd tier search engines exist, and they take 4-6 months just to find you. Google has no problem at all, and a brand new 500 page site is not a red flag.

Next comes the well known secret, that googlebot likes sites that are constantly updating. You need to get your site in that category, by updating content daily. You can always add a post every day, but our scenario is the webmaster who owns 10+ sites. Updating them can become a nightmare very quick.

An easy way to do this, is to put up a secondary Wordpress blog, with a scraper plugin, that posts 5 news stories from your niche every day. Link from your homepage as “News”. This method is not totally efficient, because google will not index all of the posts from the scraper. Still, the pinging and the sitemap update show your site as being alive. A custom scraper that spins the posts would be ideal.

Another controversial revenue source, that also creates content at the same time, is an Ebay store. I know, stupid people at fora will nag, oh my stores are deindexed, Google hates BANS etc etc whine whine.

Of course Google hates Ebay stores, because by themselves they are merely scrapers. Integrate them in a complete site though, and they become a great part of it. Ebay is so big, that you cannot possibly not find a niche to fit an Ebay store. Every search a visitor does, creates another page (the search log will be priceless later when you want to tweak the site and squeeze every penny). Mcjiffy is fine for this job, but you need to tweak the template.

An easier alternative is an Amazon store, but it does not sit in your server, and you lose the content benefit.

You have researched your competition, right? Include a light directory script in your site, that links to them. Yes, link to your competition.

Why? Because a site is judged by its relevant outgoing links, and unfortunately, the relevant sites are mostly your direct competitors. Sure you can link to a wikipedia page, or another niche article. But they are not enough, you need at least 50 links.

Then, create links with your competitors name as anchor text, and link to your directory pages. Most webmasters are not narcissistic enough to rank for their own name, so go ahead and rank for it. Sure, people will simply land on your page, and click the link, landing on the competition. But a small percentage will browse around. You will be stealing a percentage of their traffic, and they cannot complain, because you are already linking to them. A long term benefit is that you can charge for their listing when you gain traffic.

An even better version is to use a script that asks for reciprocal links in order for someone to submit his site. But do as mentioned above, link to the top 20+ in your niche by yourself. An empty directory is useless. This is a nice fire-and-forget method, that benefits you long term.

If you do not know what trackbacks are, just google it.

Trackback spamming is a quick and dirty way of getting some relevant backlinks.

How do you do it?

  • Open a clean excel file, and a google page.
  • Search for your target keyword + trackback
  • Open the results one by one. In firefox, Ctrl+F will let you search for the word “trackback” fast.
  • Copy the url for trackbacking the post to your excel.
  • Continue to the next page.

Things to note, are these:

Some blogs do not show the trackback url immediately, some need you to click, and then they show it. Others show up a captcha. From experience, blogger.com and wordpress.com blogs have trackbacks disabled by default, so ignore these.

Once you have a list of 200 urls, copy them all in a line in a wordprocessor. Separated by spaces.

Make a new post at your blog, and below where it says “trackbacks” paste the long line of urls.

Once you publish the post, wordpress will start pinging the other blogs, saying “hey, I referenced you”. It will show a link, a reference to your post, referencing their post. Easy.

Expect 5-30 backlinks for every 200 blogs that you spam. It is very easy, effective and gives you relevant backlinks.

EDIT: Now we have the pingcrawl plugin! Say thanks to Eli, the seo with a blue hat.
