Traffic Laundering
I am going to introduce to you a new concept, a new way to think out of the box.
I call this technique traffic laundering, because it basically flips one type of traffic, usually the useless type, to a type of traffic that converts.
There are no real steps to follow, nor specific guidelines. You will need to understand the concept, and bring it down to your play area.
The idea is basically simple:
“Find a way to turn a non converting visitor, that did not look for product A, into a buyer for product A”
It doesnt get any simpler than that, but even like that, it will take a few examples to clear things up.
Any marketing book you pick up will talk about target groups. Different target groups, means different buying strength, different degree of devotion in a brand, different rate of trying new things etc.
For example, for the gadgets, its target group are usually 15-30, male, educated, living in metropolitan areas, with an above average knowledge of computers, mid to high wealth. A marketeer will take that knowledge in mind, when designing, naming, developing, promoting and advertising his new gadget.
Smart marketeers take this concept a step further. From mathematics sets theory, we can create a space, called O, that contains all of the customers. A subsection called B, is our target group, lets say, the gadget buyers, the 15-30 males etc.
Our clever little marketeer looks at this map, and looks at his available budget. Advertising costs are way too high to target group B, let alone the chance of the advertising campaign not working will bankrupt his web two point oh startup company. Traditional media is flooded with advertisements for new gadgets, and not to mention his competitors are giants like Sony and Nokia. He needs to find the Achilles heel of this problem.
D,E,F, M are other irrelevant target groups. Or are they? Checking closer, our clever little marketeer sees that they overlap in some points. The M set happens to be the mothers target group, age 35-50, mid to high wealth, educated, etc.
Our clever little marketeer now sits down, and tries to think like a mother. A mother with a hyper-educated, computer addicted, information-overloaded son. Mothers buy their sons gifts. Gifts for birthdays, for achievements, for good grades. Gifts that someone will really like are difficult to find. There is a hole here. We must fill it. We must make the mothers in that age group, find a gift for their sons. Make it easy to find the gift. And BANG, here it is. Out of nowhere, a totally new marketing aspect for the web two point oh little startup company.
So the clever little marketeer starts to write down his new angle of approach for promoting his gadget. The packaging becomes bigger, so it looks more like a contest prize instead of a box. Advertising on female magazines, showing young men joyfully hugging their mothers holding the gadget on their hands. “Your son will love it” lines. Silver cutlery bundled in the same package. Buying off a review in a female magazine, about new millennium gifts to sons…
So, how can you (ab)use this technique for your online business? With the same method, actually. Lets say you are promoting bicycles. I have two words for you. COMIC BOOKS. Develop a site on dragonball, and send the traffic to your bicycle landing pages. What you are looking for is the “Hey, dad, check out this bike. Can I have it?” reaction.
The correlation is Dragonball–> bicycles
Another one can be Porn–> Dating
Even more:
- Model Planes–> Microsoft flight simulator
- Celebrity singer news–> Ringtones
- Facebook users–> Symbian mobiles
- Torrents–> Video cards/hard drives
- Fishing–> Cross bikes
Hint: This also works with ppc traffic.
